March 2024

Online video remains the leading type of video content globally in 2023.

In particular, in the third quarter of 2023, online videos recorded an audience of approximately 92% among internet users around the world.

In recent years, video has become one of the most popular online formats, ranging from educational content to product reviews.

Music videos saw the highest reach, with nearly half of internet users worldwide reporting watching music videos online every week.

As for social media networks, in recent years, YouTube and TikTok have become two of the most important platforms for global users.

In 2022, users around the world spent approximately 23.1 hours per month on the YouTube mobile app. Additionally, the top hashtags used by content creators on TikTok have amassed billions of views: As of January 2023, the TikTok hashtag “fyp” or “page for you” had reached 35 billion post views.

Which device do users prefer when enjoying online content?

In 2022, smartphones and televisions were the devices most used by global viewers to watch video on demand (VOD), with 36% and 34% of respondents reporting using these devices, respectively.

Age group and generation are factors that influence viewing habits and device preferences, as younger users seem to prefer using their smartphones to consume content.

According to a December 2022 survey, US users between the ages of 18 and 34 were more likely to watch video content on smartphones than any other device. In comparison, internet-connected smart TVs have been particularly popular with online video audiences aged 35 and older.
